Vermeil Gold

You pronounce Vermeil “ver-may.” It is a combination of silver and gold. It is essential that the gold portion contains about ten karats. However it does depend on the thickness of the piece, so it can be as much as 14, 18 or 24 karats.

The base metal must be 925 sterling silver. This is good if you have a skin allergies to other base metals. The silver is plated with a thick coat of gold which is 50% thicker than a traditional gold-plated piece.

While less expensive than solid gold jewellery, the vermeil gold technique is still more expensive than either gold-plated or gold-filled, as the price of gold and sterling silver increases the cost.
