Pet Birthstones by Month – September. Sapphire is the birthstone for all pets born in September. The word sapphire comes from the latin ‘saphirus’ and the Greek ‘sapheiros’ meaning blue. A sapphire is the gift we give traditionally for a 45th anniversary, which is 6 years and four months in dog years.
As an avid cold water swimmer I love sapphires as they remind me so strongly of our beautiful South Devon coastline especially on a sunny winter’s day. There is nothing better than diving into the crystal clear blue waves, even if Mabel perhaps to watch me from the shoreline!

September Birthstone Meanings
It is the gem colour for all Librans. This is for pets born between September 24 – October 23. Sapphire has close ties with royalty being seen as a protector of kings. In fact King Solomon wore a sapphire ring and King Charles proposed to Lady Diana with a sapphire ring. And the world’s largest sapphire is the infamous Star of India.
Sapphires are for protection
Sapphires are said to give their wearers protection from evil forces, which comes from it’s rise in popularity during the 15th and 16th century in times of witchcraft. Today we more closely associate sapphire with helping us to gain peace of mind during challenging times. And bereavement is a challenging experience.
Birthstones and losing a pet.
Whatever month your pet was born being able to use that colour in a piece of memorial jewellery can be very comforting. I have my April’s ashes in a Tiffany Ring, an Eternity Ring and a Silver Teardrop. And whilst I wear the rings daily I save my teardrop pendant for days when I need an extra boost, it helps me to channel some of April’s general gorgeousness and gets me to put my best foot forward, even if I’m not really feeling my best.

It can make this difficult choice easier for some people. At the moment we’re unable to offer a clear version of the diamond colour so we use a ‘pink diamond’ colour but watch this space we have some very exciting news coming shortly which will change this….
