How to Measure Your Ring Size

How to measure your ring size? When you purchase a memorial ring from Scattering Ashes we will send you a pack that has everything you need to create a beautiful Pet Memorial Ring, including a ring sizer.

Why Knowing Your Ring Size Matters

A ring should fit snugly but comfortably. It shouldn’t slide off easily, but it also shouldn’t feel tight. Rings that are too loose can fall off, and ones that are too tight can be uncomfortable to wear. Knowing your correct ring size ensures the perfect fit every time.

Methods to Measure Your Ring Size

Here are three reliable ways to measure your ring size at home:

1. Using an Existing Ring

If you already have a ring that fits the intended finger, you can use it to measure your size.

  • Place the ring on a flat surface.
  • Use a ruler to measure the internal diameter of the ring (from one inner edge to the other).
  • Compare your measurement to a ring size chart [see below]. For example, a diameter of 17.5 mm corresponds to a UK size O.

2. Using String or Paper

If you don’t have a ring to measure, you can use string, paper, or a flexible tape measure to size your finger.

  • Wrap the string or paper around the base of your finger.
  • Mark the point where the ends meet.
  • Measure the length with a ruler (in millimetres). This is the circumference of your finger.
  • Compare the circumference to a ring size chart. For example, a circumference of 55.8 mm is also a UK size O.

Pro Tip: Avoid using stretchy materials like elastic, as they can distort the measurement.

3. Using a Ring Sizer Tool

A plastic or metal ring sizer is the most accurate way to measure your ring size at home. These tools are affordable and can be ordered online or found at most jewellers, we supply a plastic ring sizer with every Memorial Ring purchase. Slip the sizer over your finger and adjust until it fits snugly. Read the corresponding size on the tool.

Helpful Tips for Accurate Measurement

  • Measure at the Right Time: Fingers can swell during the day, especially in warm weather or after physical activity. Measure your finger in the evening for the most accurate result.
  • Consider Ring Width: Wider rings may feel tighter, so you might need to go up half a size for a wider band.
  • Account for Dominance: Your dominant hand tends to be slightly larger. Ensure you measure the correct hand for your ring.
  • Double-Check Your Measurements: Measure your size two or three times to ensure accuracy.

What If You’re Between Sizes?

If your measurement falls between two sizes, it’s usually best to go for the larger size. A ring that’s slightly loose can often be resized or adjusted, whereas a tight ring may cause discomfort.

Still Unsure? Visit a Jeweller

Most jewellers offer a free ring sizing service to ensure the perfect fit. If you’re buying a ring as a gift, they can also provide discreet tips on sizing without spoiling the surprise.

Buying a Ring as a Gift? Here’s How to Get the Right Size

Choosing the correct ring size when buying as a gift can be a challenge, especially if it’s a surprise. Here are some discreet strategies:

Borrow a Ring

  • Find a ring they already wear on the intended finger.
  • Measure the internal diameter of the ring using a ruler or take it to a jeweller for an exact measurement.
  • Ensure the ring is from the correct hand, as finger sizes differ slightly between the left and right hands.

Ask a Trusted Friend or Family Member

  • A close friend or family member might know their ring size or be able to find out subtly without raising suspicion.

Compare Fingers

  • If you can’t borrow a ring, discreetly compare their finger size to one of yours. Make a mental note of how their finger matches one of yours and measure your finger for reference.

Sneak Peek at Their Jewellery

  • Check their jewellery box for rings they wear often. Make sure you note which finger and hand they use for that ring, as finger sizes can vary.

Use a Temporary Ring

  • If the final ring is custom-made or has a long lead time, consider gifting a temporary ring for the big moment. This lets them enjoy the surprise while you finalise the details.

Average Ring Sizes

  • If all else fails, you can use average sizes as a guideline:
    • Women’s most common ring size: UK L to N.
    • Men’s most common ring size: UK Q to T.
