Dog’s ashes keepsake – Ellie’s keyring
Dog’s ashes keepsake. Norman Wilder has his dog’s ashes turned into a keepsake keyring. Here is Ellie’s, his K-9 officer, story.
Wilder spent 12 years as Ellie’s handler and lost her recently to a non-treatable cancer. As handler for K-9 officer Ellie the two handled hundreds of cases. The pair also did demonstrations and training at local schools. Ellis was a clever hound, placing second in a regional narcotics competition.Wilder learned of Ellie’s cancer late last year. He had noticed a growth in his partner’s mouth during the holidays which was checked. The growth got bigger so Ellie went to see her doctor, at the animal hospital.
“He did the services for Ellie for free since she was a police dog,” said Wilder. “Which I appreciated. I had to put her to sleep. It wasn’t easy.”
After her death Wilder had to decide exactly what to do with Ellie. “I sure didn’t want to bury her in my yard,” Wilder said. He had buried a previous partner “Obie” but had moved and had to leave her there. He eventually decided on a cremation and now she is now in Wilder’s home featured in a display that includes a flag, her BPD badge, vest, harness and a patch Wilder designed, along with her ashes.
Holt had wrapped the animal and placed her number 505 badge on her. Wilder added a law enforcement flag.
Wilder received flowers and sympathy cards from local schools. Students made a Christmas tree ornament with Ellie’s name and a badge pictured.
Wilder also has a capsule key chain with the dog’s ashes, which Wilder keeps on his key ring so the K-9 officer remains on patrol with Wilder. Wilder said he has no plans to handle another animal.
