Pet Cremation Urns: What type of urn or casket to choose

Pet Cremation Urns or Caskets

If you choose to have your beloved pet cremated you will usually be offered a range of urns or caskets to put them in, here is our guide to choosing the right one for you and your lovely pet.

Scatter Tubes: These are great if you are going to take the ashes and scatter them somewhere memorable such as a favourite spot in the garden or on a favourite walk.  They are NOT biodegradable due to the inks used in the printing process but they can be composted after the ashes have been scattered.  They come in a range of sizes and designs so see our breed sizes guide to select the right one for your pet.

Biodegradable Burial Urns: These are suitable for burial of ashes in either your own chosen burial spot or in a pet cemetery or burial ground. They are made from 100% biodegradable materials and will break down gradually over time releasing the ashes into the soil. DO make sure you keep them dry and out of direct sunlight until you are ready to bury as moisture will start the bio-degrading process.

Biodegradable Water Urns: These are specifically designed for burial of ashes in water. They are made from 100% biodegradable materials and will break down gradually over time releasing the ashes into the water. You can choose one that will sink straight away or one that will float for a few minutes before gently submerging. DO make sure you keep them dry and out of direct sunlight until you are ready to bury as moisture will start the bio-degrading process.

Display Urns/Caskets: These are designed to hold the ashes in perpetuity and come in a range of sizes including a keepsake version which will hold a token amount of the ashes.  They can be made out of a wide range of materials, wood is a popular choice and this is often a good choice if you want to fix a plaque with names and dates. There are metal, marble, alabaster, porcelain, glass…the options are almost limitless.  You can also choose bespoke urns and work with the artist in designing a completely unique home for the ashes and this can be a very therapeutic process.

Discreet Urns/Caskets: These are specifically designed to hold your beloved pets ashes without anyone else knowing what is inside.  They can be made from a wide range of materials and can be placed in your home and it will not be obvious what they are holding, a good example of this is the photo frame urn.

Garden Urns: These urns are really good for being both discreet and for holding multiple sets of ashes. There are sundials, traditional and contemporary sculptures and water features that will keep your ashes close by. These are also great because if you move house you can take them with you rather than leaving them behind.

Keepsake urns: If you want to scatter or bury your beloved pets ashes remember you can split the ashes and keep a token amount back to put into a small keepsake urn or you can even have them made into a memorial jewellery piece or glass ornament, something to always remember them by.
