Butsudan as new home for pussy cat

Butsudan is the new home for pussy cat

What is a Butsudan I hear you ask? In Japan around 35% of the population are Buddhist and the Butsudan is a shrine commonly found in Japanese Buddhist homes or temples. It is in the form of a cabinet: a free standing cupboard that can be small or as large as a wardrobe. It holds religious articles such as candlesticks, bells and a place for offerings which are often flowers or rice.

Some sects of Buddhism also place some of the ashes of the deceased inside as well and you’re not supposed to really touch the items inside, although you do in order to place any offerings. So this is was quite an outrageous thing for our feline friend.

The Japanese owner of said cat decided to post a photo on Twitter and found the following responses from followers

“He must have thought it was a wonderful little house for him.”

“This makes him look like a Supreme Cat or something.”

“I just got a new butsudan recently. I don’t own a cat, but I guess there’s a possibility that other cats in the neighborhood will go inside. I’ll be careful!”

“He managed to get inside without knocking anything over, haha. How cute!”

It turns out that this is quite a common problem for cat owners in Japan with many followers tweeting that they have similar problems trying to stop family mogs from disturbing the ancestors!
